Tutorial: Transform, Style, Blend
November 16th, 2007 | by Cheryl |
Do you like things to have a bit of randomness, an element of surprise? Me too.
Start with a simple shape. Go to Effect>Distort & Transform>Transform… Check the preview box and start playing. Here I’ve used an ellipse, made 12 copies, and adjusted the vertical scale and rotation. I’ve also changed the orientation point, as represented by the little proxy on the right. Click OK when you get something you like.
Now drag your shape into the Graphic Styles palette.

See what happens when you apply this style to other objects. Just draw a shape and click on the new style.
Now let’s have some fun with Blends. Expand the styled object (Object>Expand Appearance) and ungroup the resulting shapes. Double-click the Blend tool and enter a number in the “Specified Steps” field.
Now with all the shapes selected, press Cmd-Opt-B to make the blend. Cool.
See that open polygon shape in the middle? That’s the “spine” of the blend. You can draw another path and go to Object>Blend>Replace Spine to have the blend follow the new path.

For a gradient look, use the Direct Selection tool, select each oval and change its color :
If you want to get really trippy, select the blend, and apply your original style to it, making more repetitions and roations.

You must select BOTH the unexpanded Blend and the path you want to use as the new spine, then go to Object>Bleand>Replace Spine.

Is it a specific tutorial for Illustrator CS3? … I’m working with the CS2 and I can’t find “Object>Blend>Replace Spine”…

Great tutorial, very usefull. I have a question: Is there any other way to color the ovals with a gradient look? A way that doesn´t imply selecting and changing each ovals color? Lets say I want to colour apath witha a gradient, is that posible?
By Cheryl on May 4, 2008 | Reply
You can’t technically color a path with a gradient, but you can get the same look, Here’s a tutorial for that:

i can’t get the blend to work…i’m pressing option B and click but nothing is happening. please help…
By Cheryl on Jun 11, 2008 | Reply
The shortcut for making a Blend is Cmd-Opt-B (PC: Ctrl-Alt-B). You can also go to Object>Blend>Make, or you can just use the tool itself, clicking once on the first object, then clicking again on the second object. The cursor will have a tiny “x” on it when you hover over a point on the first object, then it will change to a “+” when you click on the second object. Hope this helps!

At step 1 when I do the transform effect, the ellipses are one on top of the other and the lines don’t intersect. What am I doing wrong?
By Cheryl on Jan 17, 2009 | Reply
Doug, perhaps you didn’t enter a value in the “Rotate” field?
By doug on Jan 17, 2009 | Reply
I put the numbers in just like they’re shown, but the ovals don’t intersect with each other. Mine looks just like the one in the tutorial except that the lines don’t intersect.

replacing spine:
1. select both the new path and the Blend by marqueeing across both with the Selection tool. 2. go to Object>Blend>Replace Spine

doug, i think you have your oval filled with some color (white maybe). you need to click on the oval and check the unfilled then you will have these ovals overlapping.
Cheryl, nice tutorial but like some others, i cant get it to work on the final step. I select
BOTH the unexpanded Blend and the path, then go to Object>Blend>Replace Spine . no thing happen.
what did i miss?
. anyone here can get it to work please help
By trung on Feb 9, 2009 | Reply
hi again.. i know what I missed.
pay attention on this part:
Expand the styled object (Object>Expand Appearance) and ungroup the resulting shapes.
keypart is ungroup it. after blending it, right click on the picture and choose “ungroup”.
yay.. finally

This effect gets wild when you paint a brush stroke. Every time you change direction or angle of the brush stroke, the result is different every time. Changing brushes also adds to the fun. Based on the result of the brush stroke, go in and change the appearance of the effect. I like experimenting with this.

On the right side at the bottom of the toolbar where you have the option to change the outline and fill color. There are three boxes with colors in them. Use your gradient on something else and it will show up there. Then all you have to do is select your object and click the color.
